STATEMENT OF SOLIDARITY FROM THE JAMAICA TEACHERS’ ASSOCIATION

In Support of the Nurses Association of Jamaica and All Jamaican Women

The Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) is deeply outraged and profoundly disturbed by the recent video circulating in the media, depicting the brutal assault of a nurse—including being stomped in the face. This vicious act of violence, captured on camera, has sparked justifiable national outrage and has prompted a police investigation. We stand firmly with the Nurses Association of Jamaica (NAJ) and extend our unwavering solidarity to the nursing fraternity and to all women who have been subjected to violence and abuse.

This incident is not just an attack on one woman, but an assault on the dignity and safety of all Jamaican women. As educators, as protectors of young minds, and as members of a civil society organization, we cannot remain silent in the face of such brutality.

According to data from the Statistical Institute of Jamaica and other national sources, over 30% of Jamaican women have experienced physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. In 2023 alone, hundreds of cases of gender-based violence were reported, with many more going unreported due to fear, stigma, or lack of support. These statistics paint a grim picture of a society that must do more to safeguard its women.

The JTA strongly condemns this and all forms of violence against women. We declare that there is no place in a civilized society for such savagery. Violence must never be normalized or excused—whether in homes, workplaces, or public spaces.

We call on:

· All members of civil society to raise their voices in condemnation and to work toward a culture of respect, empathy, and justice.

· The church and religious bodies, as moral leaders in our communities, to speak boldly and act decisively against gender-based violence.

· Government agencies, community organizations, and all Jamaicans to intensify their efforts to protect women, ensure justice, and provide adequate support to survivors.

To our sisters in the nursing profession, we say: We see you. We stand with you. We will continue to advocate alongside you until every woman in Jamaica can live without fear.

Let this moment be a turning point. Let our collective outrage fuel real change. Let us rise together—for justice, for dignity, and for the protection of all Jamaican women.
