MEDIA RELEASE
October 31, 2025
JTA MOBILIZES RELIEF EFFORTS FOLLOWING HURRICANE MELISSA.
The Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) extends heartfelt sympathy and solidarity to all Jamaicans, especially our teachers, students, and their families, affected by Hurricane Melissa. The devastation across several parishes has tested our resilience, but together, we will rebuild stronger.
As the voice of Jamaica’s educators, the JTA will activate a national relief response to support our members and contribute to recovery efforts:
1. COMPREHENSIVE NEEDS ASSESSMENT
The Association is assessing the immediate and long-term needs of affected members.
2. MOBILIZATION OF RELIEF SUPPLIES
The Association will coordinate the collection and distribution of food, toiletries, and other essentials to teachers and their families in distress.
3. SPECIAL CENTRAL EXECUTIVE MEETING
A dedicated session will guide and approve targeted interventions for affected members.
4. FORMATION OF A DISASTER RESPONSE COMMITTEE
A Disaster Response Committee will be formed to coordinate aid, manage logistics, and ensure transparency and accountability.
5. COLLABORATION WITH THE JAMAICAN DIASPORA
The JTA has engaged our diaspora partners to assist with providing vital financial and material support to educators in Jamaica.
6. PARTNERSHIP WITH REGIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL ALLIES
The JTA remains in close contact with the Caribbean Union of Teachers (CUT), Education International (EI), and other international partners to strengthen relief initiatives and secure resources for rebuilding.
In this moment of challenge, we are united by our faith, compassion, and shared purpose. We call on all who are able, at home and abroad, to lend a hand to those most in need. Together, we can restore hope, rebuild schools and communities, and uplift every educator and student affected by this disaster.
With faith in God as our anchor, we believe that Jamaica’s teachers will rise again, stronger, united, and unwavering in service to one another and to our beloved nation.
Come what may, with God’s help, we will rise stronger as we continue to Unite and Serve.
