The Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) is extremely concerned that the Ministry of Finance and Planning has reneged on its decision to pay in the August pay period, the shortfall in the retroactive salaries based on the IDT award. The Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Finance and Planning with responsibility for the Public Service gave the commitment to JTA in a meeting held with officers of the association on May 1, 2014. The Minister gave the undertaking that the Ministry of Finance and Planning would make the payments based on the data supplied by the Ministry of Education. He did not mention at that time that the data presented by the Ministry would be verified before any payment is made.

The JTA also wishes to remind the Minister that he had also announced in the media that the payment would be made in August 2014.

The JTA calls on the Minister to do the honourable thing by keeping his promise as enunciated in the meeting previously mentioned.
