The Jamaica Teachers’ Association wishes to congratulate the Jamaica Debates Commission and other non-government organizations for their efforts in seeking to elevate the level our politics from the merely emotional and visceral level to one based on issues.

The Association has concerns however, that a serious socio-economic issue such as education has not been afforded a more prominent focus.

With a third of the country’s population currently enrolled in educational institutions of varying levels and with the impact on the sector of current economic challenges, one should expect that those who are on the hustings to gain political power should focus some attention on the sector which has the potential for our social and economic development.

The JTA hopes that it not too late for the Commission to integrate this as a single area on which our leaders can focus their minds and reveal to the nation their intentions for the development of the education sector and the country at large
